Dr. Fiese (Ph.D., 1972, University of Michigan) is currently a pharmaceutics consultant to the pharmaceutical industry. In 2004, after 30 years at Pfizer Inc, Groton, CT, he retired as an Associate Research Fellow in the General Pharmaceutics Group, Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Pfizer Global Research and Development, Groton, CT. His main responsibility was managing a group that assessed the physical chemical properties of potential drug candidates, lead optimization for development of solid, parenteral and aerosol dosage forms. His research interests include characterization of hydrates and polymorphs, chemical stability, solubility phenomenon and lipophilicity relationships involved in absorption. He has published in the areas of Preformulation, Polymorphs, Hydrates and General Pharmaceutics (www.geocities.com/fiese@sbcglobal.net/publications.html).

He obtained his B.S. degree in Pharmacy in 1967 and an M.S. degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1968. He worked at Parke-Davis in Detroit for two years before joining Dr. William I. Higuchi for his Ph.D. studies at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Fiese has been a member of American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS: www.aapspharmaceutica.com/) since its inception working mainly within the PDD Section where he worked towards focused programming of poster and podium sessions. He served as Chair of the Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery Section (PDD) of AAPS in 1996, occupying the ascending and descending positions in the PDD section in the years surrounding 1996. He also served on the PDD Graduate Education and Research Committee of AAPS from 1986-1993. Dr. Fiese was instrumental in founding the Northeast Regional Discussion Group (NERDG). He served Chair of the AAPS Awards Committee in 1998. Most recently, he served on the Leadership PRT headed by Richard Bergstrom. Dr. Fiese was the AAPS representative to the USP Convention from 2000 to 2005. Dr. Fiese has been pro-active in improving industry relations with academia by serving as a site coordinator for the NPC Summer Intern Program (1986-91) and the AACP-PRMA Industry Visitation Program for Pharmacy Faculty (1990-1999). In addition, he served as a PMA Visiting Industrial Scientist (1987-1999). Dr. Fiese assumed the position of President of AAPS on Nov. 1, 2006, in San Antonio, Texas.
